*** HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US ***
According to our records it was on the 28th of September 2010 that a group of erstwhile and community minded individuals gathered to discuss the possibility of reforming a village cricket club in Capel.
Some in the room were old enough to remember the glory days of Cricket at Capel which had stretched from the late 1800's right through until the early 1970s..
Tim Sanderson, Jeff Fenton, Hugh Patterson, Jim Young and others recollect that the debate was short and the group quickly agreed it would be a wonderful idea to try and "Bring Cricket Back to Capel !" ... and the club was born !!!
Within short order notices were put up around the village (including at the Dovecote Inn where I stumbled across it !) and the original CCC gang started to be formed (Including Bim, Jon & Dan Stronell, Alex Stevenson (who would become our first Captain) , Dave Thompson and Guy Pengelley all who are still playing for the club 10 years later).
Before we knew it committees had been formed, our first indoor cricket practices had been organised (yes we were bad!) and we started to plan ahead for the 2011 season.. despite not having our own ground (that came later in 2012) a wonderful season was had by all.. with the icing on the cake being our first ever win (towards the end of the season away to Matfield).
The next 12 months saw amazing progress with both the cricket pitch and cricket pavilion being re-established at the Capel rec.. and by the summer of 2012 we really "Came Home " with the first match of the reformed club played back at the capel rec (versus Kings Hill).. 200+ people attended including the Mayor of Tunbridge Wells, and ex-England cricket great Derek Underwood who (of course) saw a Capel victory (facing the first ball at the ground [and scoring a run off it !! ] goes down as one of my few champagne moments in a Capel shirt :)).
In the next few years players were recruited, new committee members came and with the further renovation of the pavilion and bar the clubs social membership started to become of growing importance... by now the junior club was also established.. founded by our first three Capel Qualified Coaches, Bim, Graham Rolando and Tony Fowle..
Other major events ticked by - appearing on Skys Live Cricket AM show (embarrassing myself in from of the nation) , Touring Holland (twice!) leading proceedings at the Capel Fete (and playing a lead role in starting the new Capel Fri Night Fete-ival) and winning a couple of cricket matches along the way (including a few wins against Horsmonden - BOOM !).
So .. fast forward to 2020 and here we are - record numbers in the CCC mens squad, 30+ boys and girls playing competitive hardball junior cricket.. 70+ social members... and of course the Capel Ladies smashing it and winning tournaments for fun !!
What a ride, what an amazing pleasure to be involved in it from the start... and what massive thanks we owe to those founders who had the vision and passion to see what a difference a village club could make to so many people... THEY WERE RIGHT !!
Here's to another 10 years.... and of course... UP THE CAPEL !!!! ...
