One of the year’s most popular fixtures is the 20/20 match vs. our Matfield neighbours, who came to FOG Rec on the fine evening of 17th July. Matfield won the toss and elected to bat. Their openers made a cautious start, untypical of a Matfield 20/20 innings, Hoffman (12) first to lose his wicket in the 7th over, b Phil Lander c by Capel Captain Darren Semple. E Cooper (5) was next out, b Ryan Walmsley c in the deep by Joe Stronell in the 9th. The next over, the 10th so half way through the innings, saw Barsley (8) run out thanks to the quick action of Tom Stronell, with the score standing at 28. Matfield’s next pairing, Shotten (66 n/o) and Sharma (25 n/o) turned the innings, taking the visitors’ score from 80 to 123 in the final 5 overs.
The home side’s confident fielding, bowling and teamwork contained the score, with special mention going to Ryan, whose two overs conceded just one run – and he took a wicket!
Capel’s Sam Carpenter was first to face Matfield’s bowling, setting the pace with a boundary off the 2nd ball, and sharing a classic 20/20 innings with Dan Stronell. Sam retired on 52, which included ten 4s and a 6. Dan (45 n/o) hit seven 4s and a 6. On-debut wicketkeeper Pieter Booyse (13 n/o) replaced Sam, finding the boundary twice. Fellow newcomer Matt Barwick was padded up and raring to ‘get out there’ but was not needed as Dan & Pieter finished the match with 124 runs in exactly 13 overs. Capel won by 10 wickets with 7 overs to spare, and with enough light left for socially-distanced celebration on the field.
