Capel Cricket Club Men’s team continued the indoor season against Linton Park at Maidstone YMCA in a game that would determine who would top the group and go through to the final!
Captain Ryan Walmsley lost the toss and Capel were put into bat with Ian Matthews and Bim Gajjar continuing the opening duties from the previous game. The scoring started slowly and carefully as in previous games without the loss of a wicket in the first few overs and then increasing with some good running and Bim hitting the first 6 of the match.
The first wicket to fall was Bim for 17 runs which brought Darren Semple to the crease. Ian Matthews retired shortly after and Tom Stronell departed quickly after a 4 ball 9 run innings. Skipper Ryan joined Darren and the scoring increased up until the last over when Darren was run out for 21 and Ryan caught and bowled for 17. Ian came back to the crease to join Rocky Grice to finish Capel’s innings on 102 which was a good score given how good the bowling attack was.
Ian had the distinction of being unbeaten in all the group games which is no mean feat, scoring over 100 runs without losing his wicket – well done Ian!
Linton Park also started their innings reasonably slowly with some tight bowling in the first few overs which culminated in a run out after a mix up between the openers. A second run out closely followed and then a third wicket to swing the pendulum firmly in Capel’s favour, this time a catch for Ian from Bim’s bowling.
After 6 overs Linton Park were 51-3 and but then continued getting runs steadily until they were 92 from 11 overs with 11 runs required from the last over.
Rocky took the responsibility of the last over and things were looking dire after 2 wides and a four. The next three balls had no score followed by another wide and a single leaving 3 required from the last ball.
The batsman gave the ball an upper cut to the wall and set off for the winning runs only for the safe hands of Bim to take the catch and leave Capel victorious to the delight of the players and spectators. Another very close and exciting game.
The final will be played on the 24th November at Maidstone YMCA
