In defiance of a forecasted downpour which materialised into no more than a light shower Matfield and Capel faced each other on the FOG Rec field of battle on 22nd September. Winning the toss, CCC Captain Ryan Walmsley invited the visitors to bat first, and on the 5th ball opener Hoffman (0) lost his wicket to Rocky Grice. Matfield Captain P Danby (20) was next out, lbw to Ryan, his CCC counterpart, and Rocky took his second wicket in the following over by parting the stumps of E Cooper (13) when the score stood at 44. The enviable run rate of 6 an over, helped by indifferent Capel fielding, was maintained by Reddy (24), bowled Ryan, caught Simon Lander. Matfield stepped up a gear when H Cooper (83) and J Rutherford (43) came together in a partnership of 86, both bowled by Greg Ravilious, Cooper in a wicket maiden. With Hal Cooper’s dismissal and the fall of Matfield’s 6th wicket in the 30th over with 194 runs on the board the hosts might have thought they had halted the advance, but Bowden (27 n/o) and Izzard (32 n/o) steadily and comfortably pushed the score up to 260 in the allotted 40 overs.
Rocky, Ryan and Greg each took 2 wickets.
Failing light did not favour Capel’s batsmen but Darren Semple (70) shone brightly, his 20 over innings notching up three 6s and ten 4s. Alex Stevenson (13) was the only other in the home side’s line-up to reach double figures. The remainder all contributed to the board and will not be too disappointed if their scores are not recorded here, but the guest appearance of Mike Warner (4) is noteworthy not least because his runs came with a boundary, and Mark Banfield (2) had the distinction of being not out. Capel were all out for 137 runs in 31.1 overs.
E Cooper, Butfoy, Tutt and Bowden each took 2 wickets, and H Cooper and Reddy one apiece.
