On 23rd July in one of the most assured performance by Capel CC Men’s team since the club was re-founded, they defeated local rivals Matfield by 33 runs; the second 20/20 defeat inficted on them this season. Matfield will surely be looking for revenge in the forthcoming 40 over fixture in September.
On a beautiful high summer’s evening Capel batted first reaching 176-4 in the 20 overs. An impressive score always likely to test their opponents. Joe Stronell (72) and Darren Semple (55) starred, well supported late on by Ryan Walmsley (27*). Matfield kept up the pressure in the first part of their innings with H. Cooper (46) and Peter Digby (43 retired) scoring well. But tight Capel bowling, and some brilliant fielding in the second half of their innings pegged them back and although they reached a more than respectable 143-2, Matfield never really threatened the visitors total. All six Capel bowlers impressed with Jon Grice and Joe Stronell (clearly man of the match) particularly outstanding.
Statistician’s note: Capel batsman Sam Carpenter was out in the first over for 0. Given that he scored 100* in the first fixture against Matfield – he still has an average against them of 100!
