Yalding Old Boys – YOBZ – came to Capel on 26th May and by agreement the home side batted first. A stunned silence descended on the ground when opener and centurion Sam Carpenter was clean bowled first ball by Headcounter (possibly not his real name as YOBZ is a soubriquet sprinkled squad). That brought in Dan Stronell to join father Jon, and in a spirited innings score 47 runs, ten of them boundaries, before being bowled by Elton. Jon (26) had the distinction of hitting the first 6 of the innings, his time at the crease brought to an end by a stumping. For 9 overs he supported Greg Ravilious, playing his first match of the season, who quickly settled in to pile on the runs, retiring on 60 at the end of the 21st over. Bim Gajjar (19) was bowled de Livery, caught Dan Stronell (filling in for YOBZ who had brought only 9 players), on-debut Matt Barwick (8) was run out and fellow Capel first-timer Kevin Jenner made his mark with 39 not out. Tom Stronell (0 not out) came in for the last ball of the match.

Capel concluded their 35 overs with 210 runs for the loss of 5 wickets and one retirement. Elton took 2 wickets, Headcounter and de Livery one each and there was a run out.

Elton and Batman (who walked to the wicket rather than riding in the Batmobile) opened for YOBZ and formed a partnership of 69, Elton (29) first to lose his wicket, bowled Tom, caught Greg, followed by Batman (34), bowled Dan, back playing for the home team. ‘The Colonel’ did not cut the mustard, bowled by Capel’s match captain Ian Matthews for 9. Brent (2) fell lbw to Greg, but Headcounter struck out to put 42 on the board before he too was dismissed by Ian and a catch by Kevin when the YOBZ score stood at 130 for 5. The remaining batsmen, one run out and two bowled by Greg, added another 20 runs to take the visitors to 150 for the loss of 8 wickets in 35 overs.

Ian took 2 wickets, Tom and Dan one each – Dan’s bowling spell marked by a wicket maiden – while Greg (4-2-5-3) sent 3 YOBZ back to the pavilion, also achieving a wicket maiden. Those 3 wickets, and top-scoring with 60, must put him in the running for Capel’s MOTM.
