2019 starts with a win for Capel!
That first competitive match of the 2019 season, on 6th May, was a 20/20 against our neighbours from Matfield, and what a thrilling match it was. Matfield’s Captain Hal Cooper won the toss and opted to bat first, and must have been pleased with his team’s limited over innings total of 148 for the loss of 8 wickets. Ford top-scored with 37, supported by Davies (25) and 14 year-old Martin (22). Danby added 17 and the Cooper brothers both scored 11 not out. Dewhurst and Hoffman didn’t reach double figures while Shotton andRutherford were both out for 0 first ball, bowled by Jon Stronell and c&b Ryan Walmsley respectively. Dan Stronell’s 4 over bowling spell achieved 2 maidens and a wicket, Jon Stronell and CaptainRyan Walmsley took 2 wickets apiece, and John Grice and Tom Stronell 1 each, and there was a run out by wicket keeper Ian Matthews.
The report of Capel’s innings is nothing short of a paean of praise for Sam Carpenter. Opening the batting he stayed at the crease for the whole 20 overs, hitting nine 4s and six 6s in his innings of 100 runs off 62 balls, winning the game for the home side by scoring the run which gave him his century and a place on the honours board. He was supported by Darren Semple (23), Juan van Heerden (5), Tom Stronell (6) and Ryan Walmsley (1) not out. For the record the Capel final score was 149 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 18.5 overs. Wicket takers were E. Cooper, H. Martin and P. Danby. There are no prizes for guessing who was applauded off the field by both teams and hailed as Capel’s ‘Man of the Match’.
This was a terrific start to the season for Capel, for not only was it a victory, but it was an exciting game played in the best cricketing spirit.
